When choosing hardwood flooring, most homeowners naturally focus on the species, color, and plank width. But the way a log is cut also has a major influence on how the finished floor looks and performs.
In this short video, Dallas Watson Flooring consultant Laura Van Brunt explains rift and quarter-sawn hardwood—an elevated flooring option known for its straighter grain, distinctive character and stability.

Plain sawn flooring is the most common. It produces the familiar curved or flame-shaped patterns often called “cathedral grain.” It makes efficient use of the log and creates plenty of natural variation.
Quarter sawn flooring has a straighter grain and may reveal shimmering ribbons known as medullary rays, especially in white oak. These markings give the wood a distinctive character. Quarter sawn boards are also more dimensionally stable than plain sawn boards, meaning they are less prone to movement as humidity changes.
Rift sawn flooring has the cleanest and most consistent appearance. Its grain runs in long, relatively straight lines with very little cathedral pattern or ray fleck. This refined look is especially popular in contemporary, Mid-Century Modern and minimalist interiors.

This combination offers:
Because these cutting methods require more time and produce less usable flooring from each log, rift and quarter sawn hardwood generally costs more than plain sawn flooring. It is often selected for custom homes, luxury condominiums and design-driven renovations where the grain of the wood is an important part of the overall interior.
The clean, linear grain of rift and quarter sawn white oak creates a beautiful foundation for customized color. Mirage offers an extensive selection of stains, finishes and textures, making it possible to coordinate the flooring with cabinetry, millwork and the overall design of the home.
This is where working with an experienced flooring consultant makes a difference. Stain can look very different depending on the wood’s natural color, grain and texture. Our flooring consultants bring these elements together, helping clients select a color and finish that complement the natural character of the wood and the surrounding space.
Rift and quarter-sawn white oak is an excellent choice if you prefer straight grain, understated movement, and a carefully tailored look. It can bring warmth to a modern interior, complement the horizontal lines of a Mid-Century home, or introduce quiet sophistication into a Seattle Craftsman.
